Fillet of Mahi-Mahi @ Swiss DeliHad dinner tonight at Swiss Deli, and I must say, it was a culinary treat! I know their steaks are a sought-after item there, but lately I’ve been sticking to a fish diet, so I went for their Fillet of Mahi-Mahi (P190). Mahi-Mahi is locally called pandawan, or otherwise known as dolphin-fish. Its meat is much, much better than lapu-lapu, in my opinion.

Swiss Deli’s boneless mahi-mahi fillet is pan-fried in olive oil and butter, which gives it that appetizing aroma. Capers, slivers of tomato and mushrooms add texture to the dish. I don’t particularly enjoy capers, but I was surprised it actually went well with the fish.

Before that main course, I had Swiss Deli’s Seafood Chowder (P125), which they serve in a bread bowl. They make the bread themselves, and the consistency is like that of French bread’s. Of course you can eat the bowl too!

My friend, Rochelle Venuti — she and her husband own Swiss Deli, Picobello Ristorante Italiano and Prego Café — had the Veal Bratwurst (P130) in gravy with lots of sweet white onion. I had a juicy bite of it, of course. ;)

To cap the meal, we each had a glass of Salisbury 2004 (P429.50 per bottle), a Shiraz-Cabernet that’s a tinge spicy, but not very strong as other Australian reds tend to be. A perfect accompaniment to my meal.

A note on having red wine with fish. As French chef extraordinaire, Claude Le Neindre, put it to me once, it’s no longer taboo to have red wine with white meat. Today, it’s all about the taste, and preference. Claude said, so long as the wine does not drown out the subtle flavors of the meal, then it’s OK. I agree.

Speaking of wines, Swiss Deli also has a wine cellar, down in the basement level. They have a wide selection of French, Italian, Australian, English, South American and South African brands. Some of my favorites are the South African Libertas and the Santa Rita reds from Chile.

Swiss Deli is located in Lanang, Davao City, on J.P. Laurel Avenue, across the street from the Damosa building. For reservations and orders, call (82)234-0271. They are in fact a delicatessen: you can order sausages, cheeses, olives, sun-dried tomatoes, wines, bread, and many other foodstuffs for take out. They’re open everyday from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
