Quarter Chicken @ Sunburst This restaurant has long been in existence in Davao and in Cebu, and it’s actually one of the first that capitalized on fried chicken as a delicacy among Filipinos.

Sunburst Fried Chicken is practically an institution already; sadly, though, it has not maintained its market dominance. Last night, I convinced my friend Alex to have dinner with me there.

And, I’m happy to report that the fried chicken at Sunburst is still quite satisfying. Alex and I both ordered, upon the recommendation of the waiter, their Quarter Chicken (P70), which comes with "bottomless" rice and a tiny serving of coleslaw. You have a choice of either breast and wing, or leg and thigh.

I must say, I love the way they cook the rice — sticky enough without being too heavy, and they obviously use high quality grains. Although I don’t eat rice that much, still, being served excellent rice is very important to me. Substandard rice ruins any dish for me, no matter how well-cooked the food is.

Fried Chicken Skin Of course we also had the appetizer that they’ve long been known for: Fried Chicken Skin. A veritable cholesterol trap, but it’s really good, especially when you dip it in vinegar with garlic!

The other dish that we ordered, Chop Suey Soup, wasn’t good at all. I wouldn’t recommend it.

The place looks like a throwback to old Davao, when restaurants didn’t really care much about how they looked, but only about how good their food was. So don’t mind how the place is arranged — anyway, the service is good and prompt.

Sunburst Fried Chicken is located at 29 Tionko Ave., Davao City. Tel.: 222-4844. They’re open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They have free Wifi, too.

Sunburst was the 1st fried chicken restaurant that we always go when there’s an event within the family.

Sadly when new resto came, Sunburst wasn’t able to keep up.

It is my favorite site for chicken in all of Philippines. I am from Southern United States and it reminds me of home. It is always a thumbs up for me.
