Papa Ching’s Restaurant

Last night was my third or fourth time at Papa Ching’s, and I am happy to report that I still found their cooking very satisfying. This time I brought along fellow blogger, Migs, for his first time at this Filipino restaurant.
Papa Ching’s is best known for their ‘greaseless’ chicken, so Migs and I had that, of course. I love the way that it’s crunchy on the outside, yet very tasty and tender on the inside. Even the white-meat parts are really juicy. In Davao City, this dining place is still one of the few on top for grease-free fried chicken!
The only thing I was disappointed with (but not that much) was that the chicken wasn’t spicy at all. We ordered the Half Greaseless Chicken – Spicy (₱150)… but I couldn’t detect any chili at all. (But then again, I eat chili like nobody I know.) Other than that, I highly recommend their guilt-free greaseless chicken. One order is good for two.
We also had their Sinigang Hipon (₱135), which is good for four people (and yet Migs and I finished it off by ourselves). It was choc-full of shrimps and all the requisite fresh ingredients. Maybe that’s just the way they cook it… but I look for more of the sour bite in sigang. Well, restaurant sinigang can never be better than the home-cooked kind — unless they prepare it a day before.
What I always enjoy at Papa Ching’s is their Chopy Suey (₱125, good for 3-4). You could see that they don’t scrimp on the recados at all. Migs said, though, that it wasn’t the taste of chop suey he was expecting. My take on it is, Papa Ching’s chop suey probably isn’t prepared in the traditional Chinese style. Maybe Migs was looking for the hoisin sauce.
Lastly, we also ordered a dish of Crispy Kangkong. It seems a bit pricey at ₱65, but it was really good — the crunchiness can make you want more! And the vinegar & garlic dip (it looked like they also added black pepper to it) was a perfect match.
The service was prompt and courteous enough. No frills, just straight-to-the-point service. The place isn’t all that flashy — in fact, it’s just a simple restaurant that’s clean and presentable.
Papa Ching’s Restaurant is on 25 Lacson St., Barrio Obrero, Davao City. From McDonald’s in Victoria Plaza, go straight past the intersection, and you’ll see it on your left. Tel.: 224-1703, 303-1433. They’re open daily for lunch (11:00 AM to 2:00 PM) and dinner (5:00 to 9:30 PM).

If you ordered their “spicy or super spicy” version, you will break a sweat from the heat but still enjoy the beautiful flavor. Papa Ching’s service and quality of food defines high-end cooking at a reasonable price. I can’t get enough of this place…
Davao (and the Philippines) should be proud to be the home of such a class operation. One hit, and you’re addicted. The chicken really is THAT good. You know the food is good when a large and loud group falls nearly silent because they are so intensely focused on eating.
I high recommend this place…!!!
