Lyle and BrendelThe first time I ate at Karlyn’s was in March 2007, when I had barely started blogging about food in earnest. It was one of the first restaurants that I’d blogged about. Reading my old post over at AngDabawenyo.com, I remember how impressed I was with their food.

And I’m happy to say that a lot of people still find Karlyn’s cooking worth the trip. I was there last Sunday with Lyle, Brendel and Ria, where the couple treated us to dinner — their way of thanking me for helping Lyle with a WordPress problem.

There were no tenderloin tips being served then, so I settled for their Steak a la Pobre, and Fish Steak, and Beef Caldereta. Pigging out, I know… but it’s the holidays, so leave me alone. :D

The Steak a la Pobre was OK. I mean, nothing to complain about — it was tender and tasty. But don’t expect it to be the kind you find at fine-dining restaurants. This is more of Bistek Tagalog. The fish was not bad either, but nothing to rave about. Actually, it could’ve been a lot better if they hadn’t used the same gravy they use for meat…

The caldereta, unfortunately, was a complete failure. It was dry, and didn’t even come with potatoes or carrots.

I appreciate it, though, that their portions are big enough. Apparently, the owners are aware that, in order to succeed as a restaurant in Davao City, you do have to serve good food at affordable prices and in decent portions. (It’s funny how come many food establishments here have never figured this out — I guess they’re much too concerned about short-term profits.)

Karlyn's cookAt Karlyn’s, you choose the food from a buffet table, but you only pay for what you eat. The display the food in warmers, but you can have them reheated. Here’s their cook searing the steak that I’d just ordered.

Karlyn’s is an open-air affair situated near SM City Davao. From the mall on the way to Ecoland Diversion, it’s on the second road to your left. You’ll see their sign near the corner. Tel.: 299-0087. The place is quite big, with an area for functions. Parking space is currently not a problem there.

    Hmm.. I thought Karlyn’s is one of the few places in Davao where you can eat good food at very reasonable prices. We used to frequent their place in Ma-a back in 2006. However, I was kind of sad (kind of lang naman :D ) upon reading how you described their Steak a la Pobre, Fish Steak and Beef Caldereta. Well, things have probably changed.

    Yah, It’s true! i also love their food and the place is so nice with very cool music background. Aside from that the prices are very cheap! I also invite family and friends there. And I used to eat at KArlyn’s at most 4x a week.
