Tadakuma Japanese Restaurant, a delightful Japanese restaurant that now has two three branches in Davao City, is one of the places I go to for comfort food. You see, I absolutely worship Japanese cuisine, and the menu prices at this restaurant are surprisingly very reasonable, and the food is just gorgeous — hence, comfort food.
Tadakuma actually has quite a long history in Davao, having been known by a couple of other names in the past, the most recent of which was “Mabo”. Today, they are on Jacinto Extension, across from the Bangko Sentral complex, and at the Damosa Business Center in Lanang. The latter is very new, with a very Zen atmosphere (crafted by the awesome interior design specialist, Charisse Puentespina).
I was there yesterday with my usual gang of food trippers, but we chanced upon a birthday party of a large family. I’m glad to report that their service was still personable and prompt enough, considering that the place was full to the brim. (Tadakuma in Lanang can accommodate around 80 to 90, I estimate. The one in downtown Davao can hold only about 20.)
When you go there, be sure to order a plate or two of Gyoza. They have the best Japanese dumplings at Tadakuma. Along with that, try their sushi offerings, especially the Chirashi Sushi set. Their donburi offerings are also a must-try. My favorite is the Gyudon. It’s choc-full of flavor, and the portions are enormous.
They are also known for their Japanese ramen bowls, which are served in huge portions. There are so many to choose from too! Their ingredients are top-notch and the preparation is decidedly authentic. Makes you wonder why they don’t charge more…

ahhhh.. they own ramen tei. hahaha. i didn’t know.
*envious*
@Winston — You envious because they own the resto or because we were there and you weren’t?
Too bad we weren’t able to join you on this one. The food looks delicious. I hope they’ll have buffet dinners sometime soon.
@Brendel — Hmmm… I don’t know if they ever will offer buffet dinners. Personally, I prefer ordering a la carte. Tamad kasi ako bumalik-balik sa buffet table eh!
~__~ because you went there without me.
i want tadakuma, i want tadakuma. Me craving for tadakuma. Me is hungry. I want tadakuma.
hehehe…
Hi Blogie – Feyma and I tried the place two days ago, we missed you by just a day! Among other items, we enjoyed the Gyoza and the Gyudon too, they were both excellent! I like Tadakuma, good food, nice atmosphere! That area in Damosa is really becoming a restaurant haven, with many good places all in walking distance of each other!
@Mindanao Bob — I agree! The developments in the northern part of the city are worth watching closely.
yay! sayang! pwd sana mag join.. tsk..tsk.. soon maybe
Yep, food’s nice, but they’re always out of salmon.
Last time I was there, wala din salmon. Pffft. They should take it off their menu na lang. :c
@drew — Funny, ‘coz they always have it when I ask for it… LOL!
hahahahah… cheers
hi blogie!
joey and i had dinner there last week. sooooooooooo disappointed with the service.
went there earlier in the afternoon to reserve a table. when we got there (on time kami ha, not late), they had given our table to another group. “ay mam, maaga kasi sila dumating.” gosh, what made it worse was there were 6 empty tables….and they had to give the one that i specifically reserved for the night?????
joey’s cousin, bobby, decided to join us so we asked the waitress to give us another chair and a place setting for bobby. i was so embarrassed when without a word, she just pulled one of the unoccupied chairs from the next table (there were diners sitting at that table!!!) and gave it to bobby. she also took one of the paper placemats and placed it in front of bobby. then she left. we had to call her back to ask for chopsticks, a soy dish, etc.
and for the finale, we called the waitress and asked for an additional order of rice. she took one step back and shouted at the girl behind the counter (which was located at the opposite end of the room) “isa pang rice, additional order!” yikes! carinderia ba?
grabe, we were terribly disappointed. we like the food kasi, the prices are quite reasonable and the place was really nice. pero naman, ang service…..
di ba you’re friends with the owner? i hope you forward this to him. hindi ako naninira ha? i really would like to go back there, as i said i really like the food, but if the service doesn’t improve….joey’s never going back daw.
dapat siguro kasama ka namin so we’d get good service.
@Kit — I’m shocked! Sige, I will tell the owner about this. Thanks for your feedback, dear!
@Kit — I’ve spoken with the owners already. I’m sure it’ll never happen again. I do hope you & Joey will go back to Tadakuma.
that’s great blogs! sama tayo….
@Kit — Sure thing! Text lang.
I love this Tadakuma so much from the taste, price, and now the ambiance…
the taste is addicting…makes my soul craving for more RAMEN!!!
we will try this when when i get back sa davao…april 4-12 kami bakasyon with my kids…hope we could meet na
Just drope me a line, bekita!
I’ve been eating at Tadakuma on and off for the last 3 years, no doubt the food is excellent. BUT, yesterday, the Gyudon was not up to standard and the Sushi was not as fresh as it could have been. Maybe theyre concentrating on theyre new branch at Damosa? Napahiya ako sa bisita ko…..huhuhu
Been here recently (damosa branch) with a couple of friends and I’d totally recommend it. The food is great (especially the gyoza, gyudon and the kani chahan rice) and the ambience is really nice. Plus the service of the waiters/waitresses are excellent. We can’t wait to go back.
Also, I didn’t expect there to be a lot of nihonjin but when we went there there were about 4 tables occupied by nihonjin and only two (including us) that were locals. heheh
First time I really enjoyed the food here but on coming back recently was very dispaointed, the food was not as good, very slow and small quantities of the shells etc and no more free ice cream. it did not seem the same menu as the first time and I wont go back anymore.
@TTimmy & Stevenjm — I suppose all restaurants have their down times. Maybe that was the case for Tadakuma when you went there. I was there a couple weeks ago and had the Gyudon (which is my fave there), and it was OK. I hope you’ll give Tadakuma another chance.
I would try again if i read positive things again. I was really disapointed last time. No gyoza, ice cream was gone, a show was made of cooking the shells rather than serving them and it took all night for the first few to be ready which were quickly taken. desert dish was empty and had to ask where numerous dishes were as they were either empty or not there.
maybe just a bad night but its put me off.
@stevenjm I always appreciate feedback from clients and we’re always looking to improve. Can I just clarify if you ate in Tadakuma Damosa, because as far as i know, we haven’t given free ice cream and we don’t serve any shells or maybe I misunderstood what you meant by shells. Either way, if you did eat at our restaurant, we apologize for the disappointment and hope that you can visit us again so we can make it up to you. Thanks.
i still love tadakuma
my favorite…….RAMEN
I believe they make their own noodles at Tadakuma, that’s why it’s so good.
tlaga, ang sarap ng noodles nila..i really like it………..
Hi. Can I ask for a price budget for two people? I have been wanting to eat here and would like to treat my friend, but it’s on me. So, I need to know. Just want to try out their food!
Hi Bea. If you’re going to order sushi and sukiyaki and tempura (and don’t forget the gyoza!), plus drinks, you might want to budget around ₱1,000 for the two of you. Just to be on the safe side.
Thanks for visiting my blog!
Hi Blogie. Since yun Damosa branch ang naka feature dito sa blog post mo, may I know if same quality din ba ang food nila sa Jacinto Ext. na branch? If you can give me a suggestion, which branch sa tingin mo ang better? Hehe.
The best Ramen ever.
ty for accepting my membership somehow i will be going at your place.i am from agusan sur.
Their sukiyaki is the best! None like it anywhere in Davao.

I agree! Love your sukiyaki food shot, Joanna. Makes me wanna go to Tadakuma right now!
I had dinner in Tadakuma at Damosa a few weeks ago with my students, and yes — the food was good, a bit more authentic japanese than other restaurants, which is why daw the Japanese professors from the nearby Jap school always eat there; several of them were there that evening. But I find their california maki pieces too big — dapat appetizer lang kasi ang maki; so it kinda destroyed my diet, got too full from what i thought was an order sized just right.
Haha! Yeah, I agree about the california maki being rather too big.
Thanks for the comment, Mardi. How’re things up there in Silay?
We ate at Tadakuma, Damosa yesterday. Food wasn’t that great anymore. One of their steamed rice menu was filled with catsup! Scary! My sister was too upset to eat it. Authentic Jap? I doubt it. Maybe the former partner took with him the secret recipes!!
Hi Ninang! Thanks for your feedback. I hope the folks at Tadakuma take note of this.
gusto kong kumain sa tadakuma tomorrow…sarap ng ramen..hhmmm
ohhh mY god. hee… im very much like eating at tadakuma .its really a good taste for me
