Had dinner tonight at Swiss Deli & Restaurant, and I must say, it was a culinary treat! I know their steaks are a sought-after item there, but lately I’ve been sticking to a fish diet, so I went for their Fillet of Mahi-Mahi (₱190). Mahi-Mahi is locally called pandawan, or otherwise known as dolphin-fish. Its meat is much, much better than lapu-lapu, in my opinion.
Swiss Deli’s boneless Mahi-Mahi Fillet is pan-fried in olive oil and butter, which gives it that appetizing aroma. Capers, slivers of tomato and mushrooms add texture to the dish. I don’t particularly enjoy capers, but I was surprised it actually went well with the fish.
Before that main course, I had Swiss Deli’s Seafood Chowder (₱125), which they serve in a bread bowl. They make the bread themselves, and the consistency is like that of French bread’s. Of course you can eat the bowl too!
My friend, Rochelle Venuti — she and her husband own Swiss Deli and Picobello Ristorante Italiano — had the Veal Bratwurst (₱130) in gravy with lots of sweet white onion. I had a juicy bite of it, of course.
To cap the meal, we each had a glass of Salisbury 2004 (₱429.50 per bottle), a Shiraz-Cabernet that’s a tinge spicy, but not very strong as other Australian reds tend to be. A perfect accompaniment to my meal.
A note on having red wine with fish. As French chef extraordinaire, Claude Le Neindre, put it to me once, it’s no longer taboo to have red wine with white meat. Today, it’s all about the taste, and preference. Claude said, so long as the wine does not drown out the subtle flavors of the meal, then it’s OK. I agree.

Speaking of wines, Swiss Deli also has a wine cellar, down in the basement level. They have a wide selection of French, Italian, Australian, English, South American and South African brands. Some of my favorites are the South African Libertas and the Santa Rita reds from Chile.
Swiss Deli is located in Lanang, Davao City, on J.P. Laurel Avenue, across the street from the Damosa building. For reservations and orders, call 234-0271. They are in fact a delicatessen: you can order sausages, cheeses, olives, sun-dried tomatoes, wines, bread, and many other foodstuffs for take out. They’re open everyday from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

I have never had a bad meal at this restaurant. It is one of my favorites in Davao. The staff is always very efficient.
held my birthday party there and i was very impressed with the food ,the service and some authentic swiss music!
Loved the food and so did all my guests of the party.will visit again with my very special lady .The manager was just wonderful ; all in all a very pleasant place with simply deliceous food!
dined here twice!! first with my brother, 2nd with my BFFs!! love swiss steaks, and swiss chocolates!! SWISS products are everywhere!! you can find cheap swiss wines here! promise!!
i went to this restaurant 19th sep 2009 at around 12noon,i order the ribeye steak which im looking forward to enjoy it, but it turn out to be not what i ask for,so the waitress ask me wherethe i want to change it,i did change it,once the new steak bring out to me,it cant be eaten, they are not happy to make a new steak for me,this is what i think,i will never goes back again
Swiss…I work before the last 4 years with my employer’s Markus and Romano 2 big guys are my Boss. Now I’m working here in Australia as a Butcher.Knowledge or practical wisdom gained from what one observed, encountered or undergone.I really do thankful and honor for this experience and my 2 big boss. When I’m going home.I’m gonna visit in their order, eat and I loved rib eye steak in dine with my lovely wife. For my wife special order.See you guys soon
I heard lots of people talking about the Swiss Deli and finally tried it today (Sunday)
The waiter came to the table and seemed rather rude as he talked with my wife and tried to ignore my questions and comments.
We ordered the Hungarian sausage, salad, and drinks. The salad was fantastic, the sausage was super. I was disappointed in the vegetables, had two green beans and a couple other pieces of vegetable. Vegetables must be expensive in Davao judging by the amount I got.
I will go back and try the place one more time, and hopefully get a different waiter. He was rude! ( I just want them to be able to speak to me as I am their customer)
I had a similar experience to what Kenneth’s was. The
difference was the waiters were very nice and attentive to us. The
problem we had was the food is not consistent in preparation. From
Kenneth’s comments he must be new to the Philippines. I say that
because for the longest time and many trips to Davao City from the
US I noticed a few differences from what I was use to. I say that
in just. One thing is the vegetables we are use to are not ready
available. Good button mushrooms just can’t be found anywhere.
Green peas are hard. Even the way salads are presented is strange
to us. Lettuce in salads are cut way too big for my moth and let me
tell you, I have a big moth. At least my head and stomach are big.
The other big problem is the breads look great but when you brake
them open it isn’t authentic French breads. They are the customary
Filipino white bread. I’m sorry but that stuff always reminds me of
Wonder white breads. To give Swiss Deli credit, their breads are
far better than the normal breads you find here in the Philippines.
I just don’t like that I think these people probably know what good
bread is and choose not to sell it. If I had to grade this
restaurant, I would give it a ‘c’ in American standards. Like
Kenneth, I to wanted to be fair and give them a few visits before
making my final conclusion. It is not a place I will go out of my
way to go to but I may stop in for a take out BLT on rye bread
without the greasy fries. I say take out because I am just not use
to how you have to work at getting waiters attention to pay the
bill or for anything else. In the US it is customary for waiters to
come around now and then to see what the customer needs are or if
the bill is needed.
I see you posted a pic of a smoking area. Is it inside the restaurant? I cant be anywhere that has smoke in it for medical reasons
Hi Jeff. The smoking section is totally separate from the rest of the dining area. However, I do have to tell you that the comfort rooms are located in the smoking section.
Thanks for reading my blog!
