Keep your Fwendz closer

That’s the witty tagline of Fwendz Diner, that unassuming restaurant in Metro Avenue that serves inexpensive and yet marvelous food. It’s owned by Chris and Fritzie, and will soon be growing into a family of dining outlets very soon!

“Fwendz” actually started out as a social networking site that Chris built from the ground up. Then all of a sudden, we heard that he was going to put up a restaurant. Now, it’s a great little place for hanging out, with the regular patrons being I.T. professionals and college students.

This is me at Fwendz Diner last August. I was having barbecued ribs.

My most recommended dishes there are the Baby Back Ribs (P99 only!) and the Barbecue Ribs (also P99). If I remember right, they’re both fried and grilled, but I could be mistaken. What I do know is, you’d finish eating them down to the bone. Served on hot plates and sizzling in their secret sauce, these ribs are to die for! :P

The Bulalo Steak (P99) is also good, but the gravy isn’t very appealing, in my opinion. But I put extra spicy hot sauce (not the one that starts with a letter “T”), so that saves the dish. If you’re going to have this and you’re above 40, just make sure you have your doctor’s go-ahead. ;)

If it’s not a meal you’re looking for but a heavy snack, try their Quesadilla (P49) or their Chimichanga (P49). Either is great with conversation and beer!

Another perfect beer match is Fwendz Diner’s Capampangan-style Sisig (P79). I also love — and have converted many a believer to — Casa Leticia’s brand of sisig, but Fwendz is the only place where you’ll find authentic Capampangan. It’s made of the mascara, liver, and lots of spices. I just wish they’d have a bigger serving of it… but then again, maybe not!

Fwendz is open everyday except Sunday, from lunch till the wee hours of the morning. They’re at the arcade called Metro Avenue (behind Gaisano Mall), near San Pedro College. Tel.: (82)303-6016.

I’m saddened to announce that the original owner of Fwendz has long sold this business to someone else. I believe they’re still operating, but I doubt if it’s still the same restaurant I’ve known.
